Well, Earth, Wind & Fire certainly thought September was worth celebrating. But is it also a good time to find a new job or hire?
The summer holidays are over, everyone is back at their desks and those conversations that were going to happen “when we get back” suddenly need to happen.
Which raises the obvious question: is September actually a good time to look for a new job?
The UK jobs market isn't exactly awash with vacancies at the moment. The latest ONS figures put the number of vacancies at 707,000, down 2.7% on the previous year. There are also 2.5 unemployed people for every vacancy.
So this isn't a case of waiting until September and watching the jobs market magically spring back to life.
What September does bring is momentum.
Hiring managers are back from holidays. Budgets are being revisited. Businesses are looking towards the final quarter and, in some cases, realising that the vacancy they put off dealing with in July hasn't actually gone away.
For jobseekers, that makes September a sensible time to start looking.
There is also a practical consideration. Start looking now and you could be interviewing during September and October, rather than finding yourself starting the whole process as Christmas approaches.
The same logic applies.
If you've spent the summer saying “we'll look at it in September”, well, September has arrived.
For businesses looking for language skills, there is perhaps even more reason not to hang around. If you need someone who speaks German, French, Spanish, Italian or one of the Nordic languages, the pool of suitable candidates is already smaller than it is for many mainstream roles.
The latest ONS figures also show the labour market has become less tight than it was a year ago, meaning employers have more choice than they did previously.
That doesn't necessarily mean finding the right person is easy.
There probably isn't a single month that deserves that title.
But September does have one useful characteristic: people start doing things again.
Candidates start thinking seriously about their next move. Employers start looking at vacancies that have been sitting on the to-do list. Recruitment conversations that went quiet in August start again.
At UK Language Jobs, September is therefore a pretty good time to see what's out there, whether you're looking for your next role or trying to find someone with the language skills your business needs.
So perhaps Earth, Wind & Fire were onto something.
September might not be the month to sit on the sidelines. It could be the month to get moving.
